EMA® Oral Appliance: How It Works for Sleep-Disordered Breathing

Sleep Apnea & Snoring Treatment in Brentwood, TN

EMA logo - elastic mandibular advancement

The Elastic Mandibular Advancement (EMA) oral appliance is a custom dental device designed to hold the lower jaw slightly forward to minimize or eliminate snoring and the symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a condition in which breathing repeatedly stops during sleep. Patients who use the EMA oral appliance often find relief without relying on a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine or undergoing invasive surgery.

Understanding The EMA Sleep Apnea Oral Appliance

The EMA specifically corrects snoring and improves air flow for patients with obstructive sleep apnea. This removable appliance advances the lower jaw (mandible), opens the bite, and improves airflow while you sleep.

The appliance is made of durable acrylic and features interchangeable elastic straps in 9 lengths and 4 tension options. This results in 36 possible settings in total. The straps are swapped out over time to gradually move the lower jaw (mandible) forward, while still permitting the jaw to move side-to-side. Straps can be changed easily at home, without visiting our office.

Elastic Mandibular Advancement doesn’t interfere with breathing through the mouth and can be used even when you are congested, have a cold, or have allergies. The 36 different straps provide maximum comfort while effectively repositioning the jaw to improve breathing, airflow, and sleep quality.
